The Frederico de Freitas House-Museum was inaugurated in 1988. It occupies the Calçada Palace, former residence of the Counts of Calçada, whose origin dates back to the 17th century. It was for about 40 years the residence of Dr. Frederico de Freitas (1894-1978), lawyer, notary and collector from Madeira, who acquired an impressive collection of works of art, bequeathed by his death to the Autonomous Region of Madeira. The ambience of the home of one of the greatest local collectors, where important furniture, sculpture, painting, ceramics, glass and metal are combined, is combined with the special charm of a residential interior. In 1999, the Casa-Museu was enlarged and enriched with the opening of the House of Azulejos, where the vast collection of Portuguese and foreign tiles is exhibited.
