Largo da Sé, 2400 Leiria
The Cathedral of Leiria was built in 1559, at the time of the second Bishop of Leiria, D. Frei Gaspar do Casal, and under the responsibility of the Architect Afonso Álvares. It was concluded in 1574, the year of the birth of the poet Francisco Rodrigues Lobo. Built in a quite austere architecture, this Mannerist and Baroque style temple is an imposing Hall Church similar to the cathedrals of Portalegre and Miranda do Douro. The Poet Acácio de Paiva, who was baptized in this cathedral, used to play in the churchyard during his childhood and here he got married with Constança Correia.
